| On an unusually sunny day by ELR standards, Day One of the two-day Autumn steam gala began well, with Ian Riley's 'Lancashire Fusilier', 45407 hauling the first passenger service of the day. From then on it was 45407, followed by the Jinty, 47324 double-headed with 'Earl David', No.15 (both running tender to tender, which gave us a chimney first shot in both directions - congratulations on getting it right this time ELR!), then 'The Great Marquess', 61994 hauling the passenger services from Heywood to Rawtenstall. In between was trusty ELR veteran loco 'Gothenburg', 32, which was taking a two coach shuttle between Bury Bolton Street and Ramsbottom at various times of the day. The one other participant was the Peckett 1370 "May", which was shuttling about between the platforms at Bury Bolton Street and the Bury South Signal Box.
I must admit that I was really pleased to see Gothenburg in service, on previous occasions it has usually only made appearances on the 'Jimmy the Jinty' weekends, so has usually been hidden behind a 'face', this was my first opportunity to get a picture of it in its impressive new lined out green livery in all its glory, and very nice it looked too. After all the ELR's steam problems this year it was great to see them put on another excellent steam event, and the mild and pleasant weather certainly made this a very enjoyable day. Well done and thank you to to all the volunteers and staff at the ELR who worked so hard to make this event happen and make it a success. Nice one folks! |
