On Sunday 27th of September 2009 it was a short trip north again to Embsay near Skipton for Day Two of the annual "Harvest of Steam" event, which was taking place over that weekend.

The main attraction this time was the visiting BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 No. 78019, one of only four survivors in this class, which was visiting from the Great Central Railway just for the duration of the event. This black loco was a very impressive sight, always smartly turned out, and producing lots of smoke and steam, a lovely sight with either passenger coaches or goods wagons attached. Well worth the trip alone to see this in service. The other steam power was provided by another visiting loco, this time "Darfield No.1", who, according to the Embsay stocklist, was visiting the Railway for a one year period from June 2008 (this has now been extended for another period). This loco was visiting from the Llangollen Railway, and according the website, was formerly based at Embsay until the late 1980s. The Llangollen site says that this loco was built by the Hunslet Engine Co. Ltd. of Leeds in October 1953 for the National Coal Board.

Diesel loco D5600 was also in service, and took turns with goods and passenger working as well (these included standard and vintage coaching stock).

One of the highlights of the event, unfortunately at the end of the day when it was starting to get a bit gloomy, was the double header, which consisted of both 78019 and Darfield No. 1. 78019 arrived from Embsay light engine, before joining up with Darfield, who had hauled the standard coach set up from Bolton Abbey to the Stoneacre passing loop. These locos were coupled together there, and then with 78019 at the front, they double headed back to Embsay, both locos looking very impressive as they passed by us with a fantastic display of steam and smoke at our location just to north of Holywell Halt.

My thanks to all the staff and volunteers at the YDR for yet another enjoyable event, always nice to visit this very scenic part of the country (even if it is in Yorkshire)! smile
