After Saturday's 'thrash' fest at the ELR, it was over to the other side of the Pennines on Sunday 31st to make our first ever visit to the Elsecar Heritage Railway at Elsecar near Barnsley in South Yorkshire.

This small line operates a number of smaller standard guage steam and diesel locos, and this day, in place of the usual workhouse the 'Mardy Monster', we found the first run of the day being worked by a diesel, the Yorkshire Engine Company 0-6-0DE No. 2895 "Earl of Strafford". Due to a slight technical problem with steam loco the Sentinel Waggon Works 4wVBT No. 9599 "William", the diesel had been brought in whilst a repair was effected. William was soon repaired I'm glad to say and it handled all the rest of the services that day. We weren't complaining about this at all though as it's always nice to get an extra loco thrown in as a bonus when you aren't expecting it.

As on the previous day, the Sun was again blazing down on us, and this did cause some problems taking pictures because the track runs north/south, and with the locos running smokestack to the north it wasn't at all easy to get shots that didn't look burned out. That's why there aren't many shots of the moving locos taken from the front, but lots of them from the side and rear! smile

This was a very enjoyable first visit, and we'll certainly look forward to going back again for one of their special events in the near future. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and as a bonus we were treated to a tour of the workshop as well, so I'd like to say a big thank you to the Guard who was on duty that day, and to the senior driver, and we really appreciated all of your kindness and helpfullness, my apologies for not getting your names.

If anyone is thinking of a trip over to Elsecar I would say do make the effort, many of the heritage lines that operate the smaller locos are often overlooked, but these are always well worth visiting, and are usually a good day out.

Thank you Elsecar!
