The ELR's annual "1940s Wartime Weekend" took place over the late May Bank Holiday Weekend again, and as well as the various steam locos on display, there was also the usual re-enactments and displays at various stations along the line.

This gallery contains pictures taken at Bury, Ramsbottom, Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall, and also includes shots of the "Battle Stations" event at Regensburg (Rawtenstall) Station on Monday afternoon.

Due to visits to Peak Rail and the Midland Railway on the Saturday and Sunday this was the only day I was able to attend this year.

Steam locos on duty that day included former US S160 loco '5197', which again carried the "Dambuster Raider" nameplate, and former L & YR '1300', which double headed with the Jinty 47324. I'm not one for criticising heritage railways as I like them very much, but with so many visitors travelling and at the various stations that day I failed to see the logic in having the two locos arranged in such a way that both ran tender first from Bury to Rawtenstall, and then after changing ends, tender first back to Bury again - swapping them around would have seen both with a chimney first loco on each journey, and with the exception of the 1700 service from Bury, which arrived 'topped and tailed' with both locos smokestack first, it was disappointing not to see them shown off to the visitors the way they look best.

I'm sure the ELR will say there were operational reasons for doing this, but with so many non-railway enthusiasts at the event it would most definitely have looked more impressive if the first and last sight of these locos wasn't a big black tender's backside! smile
