| My first visit to the Peak Railway in Derbyshire was a good one, the Sun shone, and there was a very tasty looking newly refurbished Class 37 on duty (37152 according to the timetable, but no name or number on the loco as yet though), and a chance to ride on this 4 mile system from Rowsley South to Matlock via Darley Dale.
Sadly, or fortuitously depending on how you look at it, the 37 sprung a water leak and had to be taken out of service during the afternoon, resulting in a replacement by Class 44 'Peak' Penyghent D8 for the remainder of the day. This gave us the chance to photograph and ride behind two locos instead of one. The other enjoyable trip was a short one on the narrow two foot guage "Derbyshire Dales Narrow Guage Railway", which had recently had its track extended, and we were also able to have a wander around the yard and see just how many small locos they have there on those sidings. Highlight of the day though was a trip inside the workshop to see the newly restored 8F '8624', which had just recently been steamed for the first time since it was rescued from the Barry scrapyard and rebuilt, and with its crimson paint job it looked really impressive, and a credit to all the people who had worked so hard to get it finished. Can't wait to see this one out on the line hauling coaches about! All in all an enjoyable day out on a friendly and picturesque railway. |
